Nakazawa Shin'ichi 中澤慎一, 1956-
Shin'ichi Nakazawa was born in Tokyo in 1956 and educated at Rikkyo University.
He began making copperplate prints in 1975, teaching himself the tedious and demanding
etching process. Because of the painstaking requirements of his prints, Nakazawa makes
quite limited editions. He employs etching as the focal point of his work, and
then adds gold, silver, or platinum leaf to each print by hand. His compositions
are mainly blocks of these overlays often accompanied by Japanese classic writing.
His philosophy is simply to create order and balance in a given limited space,
taking a traditional theme to a modern conclusion. He says his model is the 17th
century artist,
Sōtatsu 俵屋宗達,
noted for his decorative paneled screens full of poetic
imagery combined with visually brilliant beauty.
