Joan Williams, 1922-2002.
"She was born in Pontypridd in South Wales in 1922 and had studied at High Wycombe School of Art before attending the Royal College of Art and then the Central School of Art in London. Her first teaching posts were at Medway College of Art and the Shipley School of Art. But the most important part of her career was spent as Head of Printmaking at Maidstone College of Art in Kent, while a sabbatical year from the college was spent teaching in California. Eventually she retired to work freelance as a painter and printmaker....
She found her inspiration from bleak moorland scenery and outcrops of rock, fields, marshes and long, empty foreshores without any
sign of human habitation. However warm the colouring, there was an element of desolation, particularly in her printmaking."
