Aixinjueluo Yuge 愛新覺罹 毓歌

Aixinjueluo_Yuge_photo (50K) Aixinjueluo Yuge's surname indicates that he belongs to the imperial clan of the Qing Dynasty. He is a college teacher at Beijing University where he teaches Chinese history.

His style combines traditional Chinese characters with a semicursive hand--xing shu 行 書. The strokes are heavy, wet with ink, and vigorous. The density and thickness of each line is rendered more graceful by occasionally thinner stokes or a dry brush that produces "flying white."

Translation of poem by Zhu Xi 朱熹 (1130-1200 CE):

Youth exchanged for old age; learning confusion arises
One inch of light in darkness--not to be ignored
Not yet awakened pond spring grass dreams
In front of steps paulownia leaves already autumn announce.

未覺池塘春草夢
階前梧葉已秋聲

Translation of 山行—a poem by Du Mu (803-852 C.E., Tang Dynasty):

Far away on the cold mountain, a stone path slants upwards,
In the white clouds is a village, where people have their homes.
I stop the carriage, loving the maple wood in the evening,
The frosted leaves are redder than the second month's flowers.

停車坐愛楓林晚
霜葉紅于二月花

Translation of Zhang Ji's poem:

While I watch the moon go down,
a crow caws through the frost;
Under the shadows of maple-trees
a fisherman moves with his torch;
And I hear, from beyond Suzhou,
from the temple on Cold Mountain,
Ringing for me, here in my boat,
the midnight bell.

Translation of "Seeing Meng Haoran Off" 送孟浩然之廣陵, a poem by Li Bai—a.k.a. Li Po, Li T'ai Po—701-762 C.E., Tang Dynasty:

My old friend, leaving west,
bid farewell at Yellow Crane Tower,
among misty blossoms of the third month,
goes down to Yangzhou.

His lone sail going farther and father
vanishes into the azure skies,
now only the Long River is flowing
to the edge of Heaven.

Translation:

The "four gentlemen" refers to the four noble plants and flowers that embody the ideals of the literati spirit: 菊竹蘭 and 梅; i.e., chrysanthemum, bamboo, orchid and plum blossom.

The chrysanthemum is a symbol of the scholar and recluse, who is generally depicted as a noble and dignified person living an unworldly way of life devoted to music, poetry, calligraphy and painting.

The bamboo also symbolizes the scholar-gentleman because of its properties: flexible yet sturdy and evergreen. It is also a symbol of longevity and courage in adversity because it does not break even in a strong wind. And since its leaves cast a welcome shade, it also symbolizes benevolence.

The orchid, whose natural habitat is secluded woodlands, remote valleys and hidden rock crevices, symbolizes the Confucian and/or Taoist scholar living in rural seclusion. It is also symbolizes virtue and purity.

The plum tree blossoms in winter and heralds the return of spring, life and hope after the end of the cycle of birth, growth and decay. It therefore symbolizes strength, fortitude and venerable old age and is associated with poetry and learning.
